Autumn is 17 years old but seems too serious for her age. While her schoolmates are interested in hanging out and parties, Autumn keeps to herself, plays guitar and composes her own songs. One day, feeling strange and sick, she goes to the doctor and finds out that she is pregnant. Autumn does not wish to keep the baby, but there is no one to advise or help her in her small town in the middle of rural Pennsylvania. She only trusts her cousin Skylar, so they put together their meagre savings to go to New York. But things are not as simple as they might seem – especially given that Autumn is still a minor, and that quite a few weeks have passed since the baby was conceived …

The story follows more of a conventional hero’s journey, in terms of this young girl who is kind of up against the world and is confronting very real barriers that are in the way of her getting a legal abortion. I think the film is so much about the fact that women don’t have power over their bodies, and that they’re up against all these invisible barriers around them that are essentially created by men, so it’s about autonomy and envy and power.
