The year 1968 left a permanent mark on over half a million Yugoslavians, among them Maribor-based Metka Autor, a Metalna worker, who left for Germany at 28 in hope of a better tomorrow. There, she and her husband were able to earn enough to buy land and build a house. Almost fifty years later, she hospitably welcomed a young couple from Afghanistan into her home in Affolterbach. 

In the film, Metka Autor reminisces on the experience of Maribor immigrant workers while browsing family photo albums and preparing dishes. Newsreel 80 records the day-to-day life of this 81-year-old, who generously understands the hardships of contemporary migrants: those who fled to Germany from war zones and found refuge there, as well as those who come to seek temporary work.

The film screening announces Nika Autor’s solo exhibition Meine Chance, Eine Chance, Keine Chance, curated by Bojana Piškur at the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova (MG+MSUM). The exhibition opens on 21 October and features the artist's current works made in collaboration with the Newsreel Front (Obzorniška fronta), including the first public showing of three new newsreels as well as photographs, collages and drawings.
